Description

For those who measure adventure in vertical gains and untamed vistas, this two-day trekking in Kenya experience across two of the Aberdare Range’s most dramatic peaks – Rurimeria (3,860m) and Kipipiri (3,349m) – delivers heart-pounding ascents, alpine meadows, and nights under Kenya’s starriest skies.

Day 1: Rurimeria – The Deceptive Summit

Your Trekking in Kenya Adventure begins with a scenic drive from Nairobi to Aberdare National Park. After a brief registration, meet your expert guide and set off on your first hike beginning at Ndunyu Njeru trailhead, where the Aberdares reveal their first secret: Rurimeria’s “false summits.” This peak plays tricks on the mind – each grassy ridge promises the top, only to unveil another climb. The ascent weaves through four distinct ridges. The first ridge consists of a steep 400m scramble through grassland, where jackal buzzards circle overhead. When you reach above 3,000m, the landscape shifts to giant lobelias and everlasting flowers, hardy survivors of the mountain’s mood swings. At the true summit (3,860m), the reward is unmatched: views stretch across the Aberdare’s shark-tooth ridges to Mount Kenya’s glacial peaks (weather permitting).

After an invigorating picnic lunch with panoramic views at the peak, descend back as golden light bathes the valleys, then transfer to your forest campsite. End your day with a relaxing evening at the campsite in the middle of nature with a freshly prepared dinner. As temperatures drop, gather around a bonfire and share stories, while the Milky Way emerges. Sleep to the sounds of giant forest hogs rustling in the understory. For those who need a bit more comfort – cozy cottages await (Add-on).

Day 2: Kipipiri – The Butterfly Mountain

After enjoying a hearty breakfast amidst the awakening nature embark on your next expedition. Named for its fluted silhouette (the Kikuyu word for “butterfly”), Kipipiri offers a gentler but no less spectacular trek. The trail winds through bamboo groves which are home to colobus monkeys and rare Abbott’s starlings and open moorlands where you might spot elands among other antelopes. From the summit, the Great Rift Valley unfurls – a 2,000m drop to lakes Naivasha and Elementaita and a breathtaking finale to your trekking in Kenya journey. Savour a last picnic lunch before descending back to the trailhead. On your journey back to Nairobi, whilst enjoying the views of the Great Rift Valley, there is plenty of time to reflect – taking with you unforgettable memories of the Aberdare’s magic.
