    Aberdare National Park

The Kenya most travellers never find

Mention Kenya to most people and they'll picture flat savannah, acacia trees, and lions watching wildebeest from a distance. Beautiful, yes. But the Aberdares are something completely different and most visitors to Kenya never even hear about them. This high-altitude mountain range sits about 100km north of Nairobi yet it feels like a different country.

At its heart is a national park that climbs from dense bamboo forest through rolling moorland to rocky alpine peaks above 4,000m. The air is thin and cold, the trails are real and on a clear day the views stretch all the way to Mount Kenya on one side and the Great Rift Valley on the other. It's the kind of place that makes you wonder why nobody told you about it sooner. From ancient forest floors to the roof of Kenya What makes the Aberdares genuinely unlike anywhere else in the country is how dramatically the landscape changes as you climb. You begin in bamboo forest so thick it blocks out the sky - shafts of green-gold light cutting through the canopy, buffalo tracks crossing the path more often than human footprints. Then the forest gives way to open moorland that rolls on for miles, dotted with giant lobelias and tussock grass that look almost alien in their scale. Higher still, the terrain turns raw and rocky, volcanic formations jutting out of the hillside as if the earth never quite finished cooling. Somewhere in the middle of all this, Kenya's tallest waterfall appears.

The Karuru Falls hike Kenya visitors consistently rate as one of the most surprising experiences in the country and it's easy to understand why. Karuru drops 273 metres in three separate stages down a moss-covered rock face and you hear the roar of it long before the forest opens up to reveal it. Standing at the viewpoint with mist on your face, looking at that much water falling that far - it's one of those moments that's hard to describe and impossible to forget. Nearby Gura Falls is even taller, tucked into a gorge and visible only from a distance which somehow makes it feel even more dramatic. Trails that take you somewhere real The Aberdares aren't a place you drive through. They reward the people willing to use their legs and the range of hikes means there's something for every level. The highest point, Ol Donyo Le Satima at 4,001 metres, is the peak that stays with you. The route takes you up through bamboo forest and out onto open alpine moorland, the altitude quietly making itself known as the vegetation thins and the sky opens up. At the summit, the whole Aberdare ecosystem spreads below you, Mount Kenya floating on the horizon to the east and the Rift Valley dropping away to the west. It's a panorama that genuinely stops you in your tracks. Mount Kinangop offers a different kind of reward - a long ridge walk with the Rift Valley unfolding below, the kind of view that makes you stop every few minutes just to look. Elephant Hill lives up to its name in terms of effort, pushing through dense forest and demanding real endurance before rewarding you with some of the most dramatic highland scenery in the range. And for those who want something less intense, the Karuru Falls hike Kenya adventurers of all fitness levels tackle regularly - a short walk through bamboo canopy that opens suddenly onto 273 metres of falling water. And if one day in these mountains leaves you wanting more - stay the night. Nights at altitude in the Aberdares are cold and clear, the kind of cold that makes you pull your sleeping bag tighter and actually appreciate the warmth of it. Without any light pollution the stars are extraordinary, the kind of sky that city life makes you forget exists. You fall asleep to sounds you can't always identify: something moving in the undergrowth, wind across the moorland, the distant call of a bird. In the morning the mist sits low over the hills and the air smells of damp earth and wood smoke from the campfire. There's no phone signal. No traffic. No notifications. Just the mountain doing what it's always done completely indifferent to whether you're there or not - which, oddly, is exactly what makes it so restorative. Wildlife that doesn't wait for you Forget game drives and vehicles queuing for the same lion. In the Aberdares, wildlife moves through forest and moorland on its own terms and encounters happen when they happen. Buffalo cross your path without warning. Elephants appear between the trees. Leopard are present but rarely seen - which, if anything, makes walking these trails feel more alive. The black rhino, critically endangered and increasingly rare across Africa, still roams here in genuine wilderness. The forest is also home to the guereza colobus monkey - a striking black-and-white primate that moves through the high canopy with a kind of effortless acrobatic calm, its long white mantle trailing behind it as it leaps between branches. And for anyone who takes birds seriously, over 250 species have been recorded in the park, making it one of the more rewarding birdwatching destinations in the country.

The rarest sighting of all is the mountain bongo - a large forest antelope with a rich chestnut coat and elegant spiral horns, critically endangered and notoriously elusive. Most people hike the Aberdares without seeing one. The people who do never quite get over it. A place worth protecting There's one more thing worth knowing about the Aberdares. This entire ecosystem acts as Kenya's water tower - the volcanic moorland absorbs rainfall, filters it through millions of tiny pores in the rock and feeds the rivers that supply clean water to Nairobi and much of central Kenya. The electric fencing around the park isn't just about keeping wildlife in - it's about protecting a water source that millions of people depend on. The rangers, the conservation patrols, the anti-poaching work - your park fees fund all of it. And if you need one more reason to make the trip, the Karuru Falls hike Kenya travellers so often stumble upon by chance is reason enough on its own. Coming here isn't just a good trip. It's a good reason to come.

I very much enjoyed the trip to Aberdare in 2024 and Eric the guide/driver/cook was lovely. The park is very beautiful; rain-forest, bamboo forest—quite rare in Kenya. I don't think many guides offer this visit, and we only saw a handful others, which added to the 'middle-of know-where' feel. Eric knew what he was doing and adapted the itinerary according to circumstances (rain, spotted animals etc). We got trompetted at by an elephant, spotted all sorts of bucks (ree/bush/water etc.), a black serval cat(!), and had company of some buffalo's and a dik-dik at the camp. The food was very tasty and made with care, partly on the camp fire. We had rain & fog, but on a clear night I can only imagine how amazing the sky would look like. Recommend!

Eric was a great guide. We made it almost to the Point of Despair when we had to turn back because of freezing ice rain. Yes, hail in the rain because of the altitude. He safely guided us down the trail, which was slick and extremely muddy in some places. He kept my spirits up and after warming up by a fire, changing our clothes, we stopped a nearby roadside duka for a cup of kenyan tea. I would recommend Daring Escapes.

This was the first tour I participated in after arriving in Kenya. It was an overnight camping tour lasting two days. It offered experiences not possible on a day trip, and I was very satisfied. I saw animals like elephants, deer, and buffalo, and we went hiking to a beautiful waterfall. They contacted me immediately after I made the reservation, and even picked us up from a hotel in downtown Nairobi. I think the guides were very kind. I didn't bring any camping gear like tents, but I was able to rent them.
