Discover the raw and thrilling beauty of Kenya with our Hell’s Gate tour, a unique 2-day adventure that takes you through the rugged volcanic landscapes of Hell’s Gate National Park. This experience offers a perfect blend of hiking, cycling, and optional climbing, set against the stunning backdrop of the Great Rift Valley. For those seeking adventure, Hell’s Gate also features some of the best rock climbing Kenya has to offer at the iconic Fischer’s Tower. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast or an adrenaline junkie, this tour promises an unforgettable experience.
Your journey begins with an early start from Nairobi. As we leave the bustling city behind, the scenic drive to Hell’s Gate offers breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley, setting the stage for the adventures ahead. Upon arrival at Elsa Gate, the official entry point to Hell’s Gate National Park, you’ll be greeted by the park’s wild beauty. Here, you’ll prepare for the day’s activities, ensuring your bike is ready, your hiking boots are on and water bottles filled.
Now it’s time to switch gears with a cycling adventure across the park’s open plains. Imagine the wind in your hair as you pedal through the vast wilderness, with giraffes and antelopes grazing nearby. This part of the tour offers a sense of freedom and exhilaration as you navigate through Hell’s Gate’s scenic beauty. Keep an eye out for the park’s iconic residents, including herds of zebras, playful gazelles, impressive buffaloes and other wildlife that call this rugged terrain home. This adventure offers an up-close encounter with nature’s raw beauty, making it a must-do for any outdoor enthusiast.
The next leg of your Hell’s Gate tour is a hike through the Ol Njorowa Gorge. This hike takes you deep into the heart of Hell’s Gate, where you’ll encounter towering cliffs, steam vents, and a striking volcanic landscape. As you navigate the narrow passages, you’ll witness the raw power of geothermal activity - hot springs bubble up from the earth, releasing steam into the cool air. The combination of towering rock walls, natural hot springs, and the otherworldly landscape creates an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Kenya.
The gorge itself is a maze of twisting passages, some so narrow you’ll need to squeeze through sideways. Water has carved incredible shapes into the volcanic rock over millennia, creating caves, overhangs, and smooth stone surfaces. The combination of cycling and hiking provides a comprehensive adventure experience, showcasing the best of what the park has to offer.
For those seeking an extra dose of adrenaline, an optional climb at Fischer’s Tower awaits. This iconic volcanic plug rises 25 meters from the valley floor, offering one of the most unique climbing opportunities in East Africa. Fischer’s Tower is recognized as one of the premier spots for rock climbing Kenya has in a national park setting thanks to its distinctive volcanic rock formations and spectacular setting.

With proper safety gear and experienced guides, you’ll tackle this legendary rock face. The volcanic stone provides excellent grip, though the exposure and height demand respect and focus. Routes range from beginner-friendly to challenging, so there’s something for different skill levels. What makes this special is the setting - rock climbing Kenya rarely offers such a wild backdrop, where you might spot zebras or giraffes grazing below as you ascend.
The sense of achievement when you reach the top is incredible. Panoramic views stretch across Hell’s Gate valley, with the Rift Valley escarpment rising in the distance and wildlife moving across the plains below. The towering cliffs and unique geological formations are a testament to the park’s volcanic history and add an unforgettable element of thrill to your adventure.
As the sun sets, you’ll make your way to Fisherman’s Campsite, where tents are set up and a campfire crackles. This campsite offers a true wilderness experience, complete with the sounds of hippos grazing by the nearby lake. Gather around the bonfire, share stories about your day’s adventures, and gaze at the star-studded sky. Away from city lights, the Milky Way stretches out overhead, making for a magical night under the African sky. The tranquil ambiance and rustic charm of the campsite perfectly complement the adventurous spirit of Hell’s Gate National Park.
The second day of your adventure begins with the sounds of birdsong and a refreshing breakfast at Fisherman’s Campsite. After breakfast, embark on a serene Lake Naivasha boat ride. This scenic ride takes you through the lake’s diverse ecosystem, home to a variety of bird species and the famous hippos. The tranquil waters and abundant wildlife make this a perfect way to wrap up your Hell’s Gate tour. The Lake Naivasha boat ride provides a peaceful contrast to the rugged excitement of the previous day, allowing you to unwind and soak in the natural beauty of the Rift Valley.

As midday approaches, you’ll bid farewell to Lake Naivasha, carrying with you unforgettable memories and thrilling wildlife encounters. The scenic drive back to Nairobi or Naivasha offers one last chance to soak in the beauty of Kenya’s landscapes, concluding your Hell’s Gate tour with a sense of accomplishment and wonder.
This tour highlights the best of Hell’s Gate National Park - cycling with wildlife, hiking volcanic gorges, and for those who choose it, some of the finest rock climbing Kenya offers in a truly wild setting. Authentic feedback from our guests
“Two days, multiple disciplines. Day one cycling Hell's Gate with the zebras, then the Ol Njorowa gorge walk, then the Fischer's Tower climb at the end of the afternoon. The volcanic rock is rough and grippy and the routes range from beginner-friendly to a proper challenge. Camp at Fisherman's was hippos splashing in the lake all night. Day two morning boat ride on Naivasha for the cool down.
“Loved the multi-activity day. Honest review on the climb: we lost a bit of time waiting for another group to clear a route at Fischer's Tower, would have been nice to have a backup route ready to use that time. Otherwise the technical instruction and safety standards were excellent. Boat ride on day two was a perfect light end.
“Beginner friendly intro on the easy climb routes, advanced routes available for the experienced. Cycling and gorge first, climb second is the right order — you've warmed up by then.
