    The Tour

    About This Tour

This two-part adventure showcases why birding Kenya is such a rewarding experience, offering a boat safari on Lake Naivasha and an exhilarating biking tour through the dramatic terrain of Hell’s Gate, providing an experience that nature lovers and adventure seekers alike will cherish.

Lake Naivasha: A Birding Kenya Paradise

Starting at dawn, your birding tour in Kenya begins along the serene shores of Lake Naivasha, one of the most popular birdwatching spots in the country. The lake, nestled in the Great Rift Valley, is a haven for bird lovers, offering a chance to observe over 400 bird species. As the early morning light reflects off the glassy waters, the lake comes alive with the activity of its feathered residents. Among the most iconic birds you’re likely to see is the African fish eagle, whose piercing call can be heard from the surrounding trees as it soars in search of prey.

Lake Naivasha’s unique ecology supports a variety of avian species, including sunbirds, kingfishers, herons, and cormorants. As your expert guide leads you through the lush vegetation surrounding the lake, you’ll have the opportunity to spot these birds and learn about their habits and habitat. For passionate birdwatchers, birding Kenya offers unforgettable experiences like this, with close encounters with rare and vibrant species that make every moment worthwhile.

    Pelicans during birding Kenya tour

As your morning birding expedition at Lake Naivasha concludes, you'll have the chance to reflect on the beauty of the birds you've spotted before transitioning to the second half of your adventure: a biking tour through Hell's Gate National Park. Just a short drive away, Hell's Gate is one of Kenya's most dramatic parks, known for its towering cliffs, geothermal springs, and deep gorges. On the way, you'll stop for a delicious traditional Kenyan lunch, fueling up for the second part of the adventure. This break offers time to savor the flavors of local cuisine while surrounded by the stunning beauty of Lake Naivasha.

    Adventure in Hell’s Gate

The excitement ramps up as you trade in your binoculars for a mountain bike, ready to explore Hell's Gate. The park's wide-open landscapes and relatively flat terrain make it perfect for cycling, allowing you to get up close to wildlife while enjoying the stunning views. As you pedal through the park, you may spot zebras grazing nearby, antelopes darting across the trail, or even a troop of baboons scurrying across the rocks.

Cycling in Hell's Gate is more than just a ride; it's an immersive experience in one of Kenya's most unique environments. The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, but its true draw is the geological wonder of its towering cliffs and canyons. As you cycle through, you'll pass the iconic Fischer's Tower, a 25-meter volcanic plug that rises from the valley floor like a sentinel. Hell's Gate is a birding paradise in itself, with sightings of raptors like the Rüppell's vulture and Verreaux's eagle that soar above the cliffs.

Later you'll continue deeper into Hell's Gate, navigating the scenic paths that wind through Ol Njorowa Gorge which is one of the highlights of any Hell's Gate tour. The gorge is lined with towering rock walls, some of which are streaked with geothermal steam. As you traverse the gorge, you'll be awed by the sheer beauty and the feeling of being dwarfed by nature. The views are particularly spectacular at sunset when the rocks take on a golden hue, creating a picture-perfect moment to end your adventure.

The Best of the Great Rift Valley

Throughout this birding and biking tour, your guides will enhance the experience with their deep knowledge of the region’s flora, fauna, and geological history. Whether sharing details about a particular bird species or explaining how the unique landscape of Hell’s Gate was formed, your guides will ensure you leave with a greater appreciation for this incredible region. Birding Kenya is perfect for both seasoned birdwatchers and adventurous travelers looking to experience the best of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. Whether you’re captivated by the serene beauty of Lake Naivasha’s birdlife or thrilled by the adventure of biking through Hell’s Gate, this tour demonstrates why birding Kenya offers a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

As a serious birder I came with high expectations. We logged 87 species across the day — Naivasha in the morning gave us African fish eagle, malachite kingfisher, goliath heron, and a long-toed lapwing which was a lifer for me. Then the afternoon at Hell's Gate added Ruppell's vulture and a Verreaux's eagle that soared right over us. Two completely different birding habitats in one day. Guide James knew every call and field mark.

Excelente passeio para observação de aves. Manhã no barco no Lago Naivasha, almoço tradicional queniano, depois bicicleta em Hell's Gate. Vimos águia pesqueira africana de manhã e abutre de Ruppell à tarde. Guia muito experiente.

Wonderful, varied day. Even non-birders in our group enjoyed it because the lake itself is so beautiful and the Hell's Gate landscape is dramatic. Boat ride part was a highlight, you get close to roosting cormorants and pelicans. Picnic lunch was generous.

Lovely day for a beginner birder. I learned more in 8 hours than I had in years of casual interest. Honest note: bring a better pair of binoculars than the basic ones provided. They work but a decent personal pair makes a huge difference, especially for the raptors at Hell's Gate that are often soaring high.
