Looking to explore a rugged, remote corner of the Kenyan highlands that most people overlook? This two-day Rurimeria and Kipipiri trek takes you into Aberdare National Park, combining two stunning peaks - starting with a gentle warm-up on Kipipiri (3,349m) before tackling the challenging Rurimeria (3,860m). For anyone interested in authentic hiking in Kenya, the Aberdare Ranges offer what more famous peaks can’t: genuine wilderness without the crowds. You’ll camp under star-filled skies, eat meals cooked over a bonfire, and experience Kenya’s mountains the way they’re meant to be experienced.
The Aberdare Range is Kenya’s hidden gem. While everyone else flocks to famous peaks, you’ll have these mountains practically to yourself. This two-day trek is designed smart: Day 1 gets your body ready with a long but gradual climb. Day 2 tests you with steep sections and tricky false summits. By the time you’re facing the real challenge, you’re already warmed up and acclimatized.
This isn’t just about reaching summits. It’s about bamboo forests full of colobus monkeys, moorlands where elands graze, and views stretching across the Great Rift Valley to distant lakes. What makes hiking in Kenya special is exactly this - diverse landscapes packed into relatively short distances, from thick forests to alpine zones in a single day.
Your adventure starts with a scenic drive from Nairobi to Aberdare National Park. After registration, you’ll meet your guide and begin the trek up Kipipiri, known locally as the “Butterfly Mountain” because of its wing-shaped ridges.
At 17 kilometers round trip, Kipipiri is a long hike. But here’s why it works perfectly for Day 1: the climb is gradual and steady. No brutal steep sections to destroy your legs right away. Instead, you’ll find a comfortable rhythm as the trail winds through dense bamboo groves and opens into moorlands.
Watch for colobus monkeys swinging through the bamboo and listen for Abbott’s starlings - rare birds found in few other places. Keep your eyes open for elands and other antelopes in the high meadows.
From Kipipiri’s 3,349-meter summit, the view is excellent. The Great Rift Valley drops away 2,000 meters below, with Lake Naivasha and Lake Elementaita shimmering in the distance. On clear days, you can see Mount Longonot. After a picnic lunch at the top, you’ll descend feeling accomplished but not exhausted - exactly how Day 1 should feel.
Evening brings you to your forest campsite nestled in wilderness. Dinner is freshly prepared at camp, and food tastes incredible after a day on the mountain. As temperature drops, everyone gathers around the bonfire. You’ll fall asleep to the sounds of forest animals moving through the darkness nearby.
Want more comfort? We offer an optional cottage upgrade with warm beds and private bathrooms - good if you want proper rest before tomorrow’s bigger challenge.
After breakfast, it’s time for the main event: climbing Rurimeria at 3,860 meters.
Here’s what makes Rurimeria challenging - and special. This mountain has what hikers call “false summits.” You’ll climb what looks like the top, legs burning and heart pounding, only to see another ridge ahead. And then another. It happens four times. It’s frustrating and exhilarating at the same time, testing your mind as much as your body.
The first ridge hits hard - a steep 400-meter scramble through grassland with jackal buzzards circling overhead. As you push above 3,000 meters, the landscape transforms. Giant lobelias and everlasting flowers appear, creating an almost alien environment where few plants survive.

Each false summit teaches you something. Patience. Grit. The ability to keep going when you can’t see the end yet. Your guide will smile knowingly - they’ve watched countless hikers go through this exact experience.
When you finally reach Rurimeria’s true summit at 3,860 meters, everything makes sense. The views are worth it. The Aberdare’s dramatic ridges stretch in every direction. On clear days, Mount Kenya’s glacial peaks shine in the distance.
After a well-earned picnic lunch, you’ll descend with satisfaction in your tired legs. You didn’t just hike two mountains - you conquered them strategically, building from easier to harder.
On the drive back to Nairobi, you’ll have time to process the experience. The photos won’t quite capture it, but the memories will stick.
Day 1 – Kipipiri: 3,349m with 550m elevation gain over 17km (gentle gradient, perfect warm-up)
Day 2 – Rurimeria: 3,860m with 1,060m elevation gain over 15km (steep, challenging, rewarding)
Difficulty: Moderate overall. Day 1 is manageable for fit beginners. Day 2 is genuinely tough but you’ll be ready for it.
Best Time: June to September or January to February (dry seasons for clearest views and best trail conditions)
Terrain: Bamboo forests, open moorlands, grassland ridges, steep scrambles, and high-altitude alpine zones with unique plants found nowhere else.
The Aberdares offer what makes hiking in Kenya remarkable: genuine wilderness, diverse ecosystems, and the kind of solitude that’s increasingly rare on popular peaks. While thousands hike Kilimanjaro or Mount Kenya, the Aberdares remain wonderfully undiscovered.
This trek works well for anyone wanting authentic mountain experience, who enjoys pushing themselves physically and mentally, appreciates wilderness camping, and values unique adventures over comfortable convenience.
For authentic hiking in Kenya, this two-day Rurimeria and Kipipiri trek delivers: real challenge, stunning views, and nights under some of Kenya’s starriest skies. The mountains are waiting.

Authentic feedback from our guests
“The Kipipiri-Rurimeria combo is one of the best two-day adventures I've done in Kenya. Two summits in 48 hours, properly tested my legs. Day one Kipipiri is the gentle one, long but easy on the gradient. Day two Rurimeria is where the false summits start — four of them. You think you're at the top, you're not. By the fourth one you laugh. Camp coffee in the chilly morning before the climb hit different.
“Did this with my husband for a quick birthday adventure. Cold at night, warm by day, great views from both summits. Memorable.
“Tough hike but doable. Day two will humble you.
“Less crowded than Mount Kenya, more rewarding in some ways. The Aberdare moorland feels remote and untouched. Eric and team know this area well and it shows. Saw a jackal buzzard on the climb.
“Deux sommets en deux jours, parfait pour les amateurs de challenge. Les paysages diffèrent entre les deux montagnes. Kipipiri c'est la forêt et la lande, Rurimeria c'est l'alpine avec les lobelias géants. Guide très compétent.
“Två toppar på två dagar. Krävande men möjligt. Vi var en grupp på fyra och guiden anpassade tempot väl. Bambuskogen och hedlandskapet är vackra. De falska topparna på Rurimeria är en mental utmaning. Maten i lägret var god.
