Choosing a Mount Kenya trekking tour comes down to one real question: four days or five? Daring Escapes runs both. The 4-day trek climbs up Sirimon and comes down Chogoria. The 5-day trek climbs up Chogoria and comes down Sirimon, with one extra night on the mountain. Both reach Point Lenana at 4,985 metres, the highest point you can reach on Mount Kenya without technical climbing.

Two Mount Kenya trekking tours, one mountain

Mount Kenya is Africa’s second-highest peak. Batian at 5,199 metres and Nelion at 5,188 metres are the two technical summits, the ones that need ropes and real climbing. Point Lenana at 4,985 metres is the trekking summit. It is the one every Daring Escapes trip aims for.

Five routes lead up toward Point Lenana: Sirimon, Chogoria, Naro Moru, Burguret and Timau. Sirimon, Chogoria and Naro Moru are the three main ascent options. Burguret and Timau are quieter, tougher lines. Our two bookable Mount Kenya trekking tours use the two most popular routes and run them as traverses, so you climb one side and descend the other.

The 4-day Mount Kenya trekking tour goes up Sirimon and down Chogoria. The 5-day Mount Kenya climb goes up Chogoria and down Sirimon. Same summit, same mountain, a different rhythm.

The 4-day Mount Kenya trekking tour: Sirimon to Chogoria

The 4-day trip is built for first-time high-altitude trekkers with good fitness. Sirimon is the driest and most gradual approach on the mountain, so the climb is steady rather than punishing. You start at Sirimon Gate at 2,660 metres and gain roughly 2,325 metres over three days before dropping about 2,585 metres on the way down.

Day one is a 13-kilometre walk from Sirimon Gate to Old Moses Camp at 3,300 metres. It takes three to four hours at a comfortable pace. Day two is the long one: 17 kilometres and 900 metres of climbing to Shipton’s Camp at 4,200 metres, usually six to seven hours. That night you sleep high, then start for the summit around midnight. You reach Point Lenana around 6:30 in the morning as the sun comes up over eastern Kenya.

From the summit you descend through Gorges Valley to Lake Ellis Camp at 3,550 metres. The final morning takes you past Nithi Falls and out Chogoria Gate at 2,400 metres, then back to Nairobi by evening.

This is the tour for a short schedule and strong legs. It is rated moderate and suits people who hike regularly and want to test themselves at high altitude without needing any technical skills. The final push to Point Lenana involves some scrambling over rocks, nothing more.

The 5-day Mount Kenya trekking tour: Chogoria to Sirimon

The 5-day trip takes the same traverse in the opposite direction and adds a night. You start on the Chogoria side, which most people call the most beautiful side of Mount Kenya. You gain about 2,585 metres over three and a half days and descend about 2,325 metres.

Day one takes you through the forest to Nithi Falls and on to Lake Ellis Camp at 3,550 metres. Day two climbs to Lake Michaelson at 3,950 metres. This is the night that sets the 5-day apart. Instead of pushing straight to high camp, you sleep at a moderate height and let your body adjust. Day three moves to Simba Tarn Camp at 4,600 metres. Summit night follows, with the same midnight start and a Point Lenana summit around 6:30 in the morning, before a long drop to Old Moses Camp at 3,300 metres on the Sirimon side.

Day five walks out through the Sirimon Valley to Sirimon Gate at 2,660 metres, then back to Nairobi by evening.

Lake Ellis camp on the Chogoria side of a Mount Kenya trekking tour

This is the tour for photographers, first-time altitude trekkers and anyone who would rather feel strong on the summit than merely reach it. The extra night at Lake Michaelson means better sleep and more energy for the final push.

    What the extra day changes

Altitude is the real challenge on Mount Kenya, not fitness. The 4-day tour works but asks your body to adapt quickly. The 5-day tour gives your body a full extra night to acclimatise before the highest camp. That usually means a better night’s sleep, more energy on summit night and a higher chance of reaching Point Lenana feeling good rather than just hanging on.

The extra day changes more than your odds at the summit. Five days means time to stop at Nithi Falls instead of rushing past, an afternoon to sit beside Lake Michaelson and a slower descent through the Sirimon Valley. You see more of the mountain because you are not watching the clock.

Choosing your Mount Kenya trekking tour: 4 days or 5

Pick the 4-day Sirimon to Chogoria trek when your schedule is short and you have been at altitude before. Pick the 5-day Chogoria to Sirimon climb when you want the best chance of summiting comfortably or when you simply want more time for the scenery. Both start and end in Nairobi. The fifth day is the difference.

Book your Mount Kenya trekking tour with Daring Escapes

Both treks run in the dry seasons when the views are clearest: January to February and July to October. When you book with us, you are not hiring a guide at the gate and hoping for the best. We work with proven guides who know our standards. We provision the trip properly so food and water are never scrambled. We cover the contingencies with backup guides, satellite communication and a Nairobi team tracking your progress.

That is the difference between a hike and an expedition run well. If you are new to the mountain and want the gentler acclimatisation, the 5-day Mount Kenya climb is the one. If you are fit, short on time and ready to go, the 4-day Mount Kenya trekking tour gets you to Point Lenana in four days flat.

Prices and full day-by-day details live on each tour page. Take a look, then reach out and we will help you match the trip to your fitness and dates.
