Mount Longonot hike: crater viewpoint or full circuit?
A Mount Longonot hike gives you two ways to spend the day…
A Mount Longonot hike gives you two ways to spend the day. You can climb to the crater rim, look over the forested floor below and walk back the way you came. You can also add the full circuit around the top. The rim on its own is a complete experience. The circuit is an extra that only makes sense when the group, the guide and the time available all allow it.

Which Mount Longonot hike fits your day?
Pick the rim-and-return plan when you want the crater view with less walking. It is also the sounder choice when the day is short or someone in the group is unsure how they will feel after a hard climb. Call it a shorter walk, not an easy one. The climb to the rim is still steep.
Only consider the full circuit once you are up there and can read the group honestly. Daring Escapes treats it as conditional. Your guide checks the group’s fitness and the time left before deciding whether it is on for that day. The strongest walker should not set the plan for everyone else. The slowest person sets the pace.
Make the return journey part of the decision
Agree on a turnaround time before you push past the rim. If the hike runs long, turn back when you reach that time and stick to it. Watch the group’s pace, the water and food you have left and the weather as you go. The descent and your breaks both take time. Plan the return as carefully as the climb up.
Stay together unless a guide arranges a supported turnback. Daring Escapes will let a hiker turn back with a guide when it is needed. Talk through any concerns before you book so the team can plan around them.

Keep the Lake Naivasha plan flexible
The Daring Escapes Mount Longonot day trip pairs the hike with a guided boat ride on Lake Naivasha. If you hope to attempt the circuit, ask how the day will be sequenced, because the circuit is only confirmed on the day itself.
It is better to protect the descent and keep the lake plan loose than to force every activity into a rigid timetable. Staying longer in the area? Our Naivasha guide helps with wider planning. Comparing another active day nearby? Read the guide to cycling and planning a day at Hell’s Gate. Do not assume both park visits fit into the same day.
Gate hours, park fees and what to carry
Kenya Wildlife Service lists Mount Longonot gate hours of 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with an exception for visitors staying overnight. Those hours are not a universal latest start time. Check the weather and current local conditions before you set off. Confirm access with the park before you travel.
| Adult visitor category | Park entry |
|---|---|
| East African citizen | KSh500 |
| Kenya resident | KSh675 |
| African citizen outside East Africa | USD20 |
| Nonresident | USD50 |
These are adult park entry charges, separate from any tour, guide or boat price. Confirm which category applies to you and the current rate before you pay.
Pack water, food, sunscreen and shoes that grip on steep loose ground. Bring a reusable water container, since Kenya Wildlife Service bans single-use plastic in the park. Stay on the marked trails and carry your rubbish out.
