Mount Longonot crater rim on a day trip from Nairobi

You can reach the rim of a dormant volcano, cycle past zebras on an open plain and walk on foot among giraffes on a predator-free island, all before you are back in Nairobi for dinner. The best day trips from Nairobi fit a full adventure into a single morning and afternoon.

Nairobi sits on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, which is why so much of this sits close. Hell’s Gate, Mount Longonot and Lake Naivasha are a short drive out of town. The Aberdares sit a little further, behind a longer and steeper climb. Here are seven trips we run and know well, compared so you can pick the right one.

    Hell’s Gate and Crescent Island

This is the classic first day trip from Nairobi and the easiest way to see a lot in a short time. You start with a boat ride across Lake Naivasha to Crescent Island, watching hippos, pelicans, kingfishers and fish eagles along the way.

Crescent Island is a private sanctuary with no predators, so you walk on foot among giraffes, zebras, impalas and waterbucks. It suits every age because nothing here chases you. Read our Crescent Island walking safari guide before you go.

From there you cross to Hell’s Gate National Park and trade the boat for a bicycle. The terrain is flat and the wildlife is close, with giraffes, zebras, antelopes and baboons crossing the track. Look up for a Verreaux’s eagle. The day ends with a hike into Ol Njorowa Gorge, past its rock walls and geothermal steam vents. If you climb, there is optional rock climbing on Fischer’s Tower. See the full Hell’s Gate and Crescent Island day trip.

Hell’s Gate entry is USD 50 for non-residents, KSh 675 for residents and KSh 500 for citizens. Crescent Island is privately run and sets its own entry fee, so confirm that number before you book.

    Mount Longonot crater hike

Mount Longonot is a dormant volcano that rises to 2,776 m. The hike climbs straight to its crater rim. It is steep and honest work but the rim is the payoff. Inside the crater is a thick forest you look down into from the edge.

If you have the legs, the full rim loop adds two to three hours and circles the whole crater. The afternoon is slower. You come down and drive out with a stop at a Rift Valley viewpoint, then finish with a boat safari on Lake Naivasha, where more than 400 bird species share the water with hippos. Watch for the Malachite Kingfisher, Great White Pelicans and African fish eagles. See the Mount Longonot day trip.

Entry to Mount Longonot is USD 50 for non-residents, KSh 675 for residents and KSh 500 for citizens. The boat safari on the lake is run by private operators, so its price is separate and worth confirming when you book.

    Elephant Hills in the Aberdares

Elephant Hills is the serious option. It sits in the Aberdare National Park on the eastern side, about two hours from Nairobi. The climb reaches 3,650 m with 1,150 m of elevation gain over 18 km there and back.

This one is strenuous. It is possible for a fit beginner but you will be on your feet for eight to nine hours, moving through forest, moorland, bamboo and rocky terrain. The best windows are the dry seasons, June to September or January to February. Park rangers guide the route and a picnic lunch carries you through the day before you return to Nairobi in the evening. See the Elephant Hills day hike and our Aberdare fees guide.

Aberdare entry is USD 70 for non-residents, KSh 1,100 for residents and KSh 800 for citizens.

    Kayaking Lake Naivasha

This trip keeps you on and around the water. You paddle out on Lake Naivasha in the morning, close to hippos, African fish eagles and kingfishers. The guide reads the water and keeps the group clear of the hippos, so you can drift without worrying about where to steer.

The afternoon moves to Hell’s Gate, where you ride bikes along the Twiga and Buffalo circuits and watch giraffes and zebras cross the track. Then you walk into Ol Njorowa Gorge on foot, past its striped volcanic walls and steam vents, wading through cool pools along the way. See the kayaking Lake Naivasha tour.

    Birding on Lake Naivasha

For birders, this is the sharpest day trip from Nairobi. It starts with a dawn boat safari on Lake Naivasha, when the light is soft and the water is quiet. More than 400 bird species live here and you are likely to see African fish eagles, sunbirds, kingfishers, herons and cormorants before breakfast.

A traditional Kenyan lunch follows and then the afternoon moves to Hell’s Gate for biking past Fischer’s Tower, a 25 m volcanic plug, with Ruppell’s vulture and Verreaux’s eagle overhead. The gorge walk closes the day. See the birding day trip on Lake Naivasha. For more on the area, read our complete guide to Naivasha.

    Two-day trips from Nairobi

If you can spare a weekend, two of our trips stretch the same ground over two days and add horses to the mix.

The Crescent Island two-day trip starts with the island walk and boat crossing, then a game drive or bike through Hell’s Gate and the Ol Njorowa Gorge, with an overnight at Camp Carnelley’s in a cottage or lakeside camping. It closes with a horseback safari at the foot of Mount Longonot, riding among elands, hartebeests, zebras and giraffes.

The Hell’s Gate rock climbing trip takes a similar shape. It opens with cycling the Hell’s Gate plains and a hike through the gorge past hot springs and steam vents, with an optional climb up Fischer’s Tower. A Lake Naivasha boat ride and lakeside camping round it out. It ends with a horseback safari at Kedong Ranch, also at the foot of Mount Longonot.

Park fees and what to know

These day trips from Nairobi all run from a hotel pickup with experienced guides and a picnic lunch. Park fees are per person per day and valid for 24 hours, straight from the Kenya Wildlife Service schedule that took effect in October 2025.

    Destination Non-resident Resident Citizen
    Hell’s Gate USD 50 KSh 675 KSh 500
Mount Longonot USD 50 KSh 675 KSh 500
Aberdare (Elephant Hills) USD 70 KSh 1,100 KSh 800

Crescent Island and the Lake Naivasha boat safaris are not Kenya Wildlife Service sites. They are private, so their fees are set by the operators and are worth confirming before you book. We can give you the current numbers when you ask.

Choosing your day trips from Nairobi

If you want wildlife on foot with the easiest access, pick Hell’s Gate and Crescent Island. If you want a proper climb with a view, Mount Longonot is the one. If you want the hardest and longest day, Elephant Hills is it. Kayaking and birding suit people who would rather spend the day on or beside the water.

Whichever you pick, we run these trips with vetted guides who know the parks and the water. We sort the logistics so your day is spent on the trail or the boat, not on arrangements. For more on planning the rest of your stay, read our Nairobi travel tips and the top 20 things to do in Kenya.
